Gas Company Red Tag

If you have a red tag like the one pictured above on any of your gas appliances, it is time to call American Plumbing! We will repair or replace your heater in order to remove your gas company red tag and keep your family safe.

What Is a Red Tag?

A gas company red tag is placed on outdated or broken items. Usually- but not always- this is a water heater that need to be fixed in order to be functional. There can be serious safety hazards that accompany a broken water heater. Due to mineral buildup, the pressure inside your storage tank can burst and flood a room or your home. This can cause damage to hard wood, drywall, carpeting, and potentially cause dangerous mold growth. Rust can also be spread through the flood area and an exposed flame in a burst water heater can start a fire. Most concerning of all is the possibility of a carbon monoxide leak. For these very pressing reasons, a technician from the gas company will be required by law to red tag your heater.

Types of Red Tags

There are two types of red tags that a technician may assign to your appliance. A type A red tag is the more severe of the two. A type A tag is issued when an immediate threat is identified. Most commonly this type of tag is given when a carbon monoxide leak is found. Your gas will be shut off until the problem is fixed and cleared by a technician from your gas company. American Plumbing has a quick response time and team of highly trained professionals. We ensure that you problem is repaired or the unit is replaced if necessary so that you can get your gas back on and resume your day to day as soon as possible.

Gas Company Red Tag

The other type of gas company red tag is a B tag. A type B tag is issued when a problem with your appliance is detected, but it does not pose an immediate threat. Your gas will not be shut off at the time that a Type B tag is issued. However, this does not mean that you should not take this tag seriously. Leaving the problem with your heater unattended can eventually lead to any of the complications and health hazards mentioned above.  You will have a certain amount of time, commonly 45 days, from the date the B tag was issued to have the named problem fixed and cleared or the gas company will most likely turn off your homes gas.  American Plumbing will check your water heater and make sure that the red tagged issue, as well as any potential underlying problem, is repaired.
